SHOKUNIN (職人)

There are people who have fundamentally changed the world—and genuinely don’t care that they did.

SHOKUNIN (職人) is a story about the CDJ—and the extraordinary people behind its rise. Through intimate present-day interviews, the film reconnects the team that helped transform DJ culture long before they realized they were making history.

Today they are surfers, musicians, fathers, and retirees—living lives far removed from the global movement they helped create.

As their stories converge, so does the story of the CDJ—from an ambitious idea to one of the most influential tools in modern music. Along the way, the film reveals that its greatest innovation wasn’t simply technology, but the curiosity, collaboration, and relentless refinement of the people behind it.

In Japan, there is a word for people like this: Shokunin (職人). More than “craftsman,” it describes a lifelong devotion to mastery, humility, and continual refinement—not for recognition, but because the work itself matters.
